Message: Dear Sir, As is stated on your web site that HRA is exempt from tax to the extent of the least of three criterias one of which is: "An amount equal to 50 per cent of the salary (basic plus dearness allowance) if the rented accommodation is in Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai or Chennai, and 40 per cent of the salary if the accommodation is in any other city". My query is- Is Gurgaon in the 50% slab or 40% slab? I have this doubt because Gurgaon is part of NCR, Delhi. Can you please clarify this asap because this will help me in finalising how much rent I have to show in office for the purpose of getting max tax benefit. Thanks & regards, Kamal Bhardwaj

Message: I purchased a term insurance policy from SBI 2 years ago. I had to undergo a medical test. I was in good health then and also now. However, in the health questionaire, for the questions about smoking/drinking I had replied in the negative. Back then I used to smoke/drink occassionally. Now even that had reduced to very minimal. Also I had stated that my parents were in good heath. My mother has diabetes and high BP, but both are in check. She takes medicines and is otherwise fit and fine. If any claims arise in the future, say 15-20 years down the line, can the insurance company reject the claim saying that I withheld information ?

Message: Sir, I took Flexi save - Endowment policy from Birla Sunlife Insurance in Jul,2004. Based on the words by the agent and my lack of awareness in Insurance, I simply took a policy where I have to pay Rs.6033 as premium per month. When I go though the document, I understand that only after 3 years I can withdraw the money (either by surrender the policy or policy value). But, even if I surrender the policy about one year premium I have to loose (around 75,000). When I ask for partial withdraw, they say based on the fund value only it can be taken (as on today's date it will be around Rs.3000/- only, after their charges). More over this is not performing well also. When I bought the policy the NAV is Rs.17, after 2.5 years it is Rs.22/-. Is there any way I can comeout from this policy or with draw some good amount of money with less losses. Please help me out. I am feeling I have wasted so much of money as well wasting Rs.6000/- every month. It has become as a burder for me. Sir, Please help me out

After one year (from Mar 08 onwards) I shall require 5,000 per month for 10 yrs for EMI of house loan. I have 5.5 lakh surplus fund now after accounting for money for emergencies. I propose to invest it as under while continuing the contribution of Rs 3000 pm to PPF:- HDFC MIP - 3,00,000 with STP of Rs 3000pm to HDFC Index Plus Fund HDFC Cash Management Fund - 2,00,000 with STP of Rs 2000pm to HDFC Tax Saver LT. Tata SIP Fund NFO - Rs 50,000 After a year go for SWP of Rs 5000 pm from HDFC CMF and stop STP from it. I do not require tax saving beyond Mar 08 (Home loan repayment and PPF will cater for that) so will liquidate this holding slowly. After this is liquidated in about 3 years, review my holdings and decide afresh. May I request you to please review this plan. regards, Jaggi
