In many ways it was fitting to hold the ceremony for the Outlook Money-NDTV Profit Awards 2008 on a 'bad' market day, 15 October, when the Sensex had fallen to close below 11,000. But the evening validated our belief that good companies are not transient, that commitment and service matter more than the movements of a temperamental Sensex. The ceremony started when the chief guest, Bimal Jalan, Rajya Sabha member and former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, arrived. Vinod Mehta, editor-in-chief, Outlook Group, welcomed the guests. Maheshwer Peri, publisher, Outlook Group, spoke about the genesis of Outlook Money. Eric Schurenberg, managing editor, Money, a 35-year-old personal finance magazine in the US, was the special guest. His insightful presentation made sense of the current credit crisis. "This too shall pass," was what C.B. Bhave, chairman, Sebi, said adding that the stockmarket systems have remained strong despite the volatility. Viren Mehta, partner, Ernst & Young, auditors of the process, and assistant editor Pankaj Anup Toppo explained the awards process. Awards were given to 26 winners and runners up. C. Rangarajan, member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha and former Chairman of PM's Economic Advisory Council, won the Hall of Fame Award. He received the trophy in New Delhi the previous day. Jalan expressed surprise that the magnitude of the sub-prime crisis had not been predicted even though it began a year ago.
