If an artiste has money matters at the back of his mind, he can’t bring that passion, that concentration to his work.

MONEY IS what you need to survive. And survival needs keep changing. Yesterday’s luxury may be today’s survival need. When starting out, your needs are basic. As you go on, become successful, life gets complicated, demands grow and with it, the need for money.

A future without any money is a grim thought. More so if you are an artiste because, then, you totally depend on your art for an income. A businessman can move to another line of business, but an artiste is not capable of anything but his art. To that extent then, what I earn from making films is critical to me.

One would think that an artiste is far removed from the financial worries. But this isn’t quite true. Okay, maybe an artiste’s driving force is not money, but he too needs to survive, be secure about his future. Besides, you keep hearing these stories of artistes dying penniless, because they were naive enough to believe that their assets would last, that they could live on fresh air and their art. Such stories force him to think of investing money wisely. In a way, it’s sad because if an artiste has money matters at the back of his mind, he can’t bring that passion, that concentration to his work.

You know when money becomes a dangerous game? When you use it to create an illusion of power–for the world and in your own mind. Sure, anyone can get caught up in that vicious cycle whereby the minute you have some money, you want more. You know, money for money’s sake. But I also think that a man of intellect will stop to think: "Is my worth to be judged by where I live, what I wear?" Then, he knows that money has assumed way too much importance in his life.

It hurts when someone cheats you of your hard-earned money. More so, when you yourself are honest and don’t like to think the worst of people. But once cheated, you spend your life guarding your assets. And there’s no getting away from that kind of stress.
